I had made a masala paste using smaller pieces of ginger, 2garlic cloves, 1 bay leaf, 2 slices of coconut. Ground them all into a fine paste using mixie.

You can also fry the chapathi with little of oil and add to the gravy. I don't prefer using a fried chapathi. Make sure the chapathis are not dried at the end. It is important to drain the chile. Use a hotter variety for spicier biscuits, but don't use more.
